On this day in 1959, a McDonnell Douglas RF-101C Voodoo set the speed record over 1000 km for the United States. First production fighter capable of supersonic cruise speed, it looped the distance averaging just over 700mph (1163kmh), thus taking the title of the Breguet Taon which had established the records in Istres, France the previous year at 668mph (1075kmh). The Dassault Etendard was the first some month before to close the distance over less than an hour at 637mph (1025kmh). The RF-101C's record would be safe until the Mirage IV had flown.
