On this day in 1949, the research aircraft Leduc 0.10, straight out of a sci-fi comic book, lights up its ramjet after being dropped in altitude by a SE.161 Languedoc. Thanks to a talented engineer, René Leduc, France set a world premiere: the first flight powered by a ramjet, which is all the more effective as speed is greater. However, the impossibility of such an aircraft to take off by its own means would keep the concept at an experimental level. The various Leduc would fly until 1957 after which the government terminated its funding to Leduc.
