On this day in 1969, the experimental rocket plane X-15 #670 joins the Smithsonian's collection, 10 years after its first flight. During more than 140 flights, the #670 had exceeded Mach 6 and brought one of its pilot above 50 miles of altitude, beyond the theoretical Von Karman line that defines the limit of the atmosphere, making him an astronaut. Its little brothers, #671 and #672, will go respectively even faster (Mach 6.70) thanks to external fuel tanks and ablative paint limiting kinetic heating and much higher (108 km). 50 years later, these records still hold.
