On this day in 1969, the second prototype of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy giant transport plane sets two world records: the heaviest takeoff at 346t and the heaviest landing at 272.2t, on the dry lake of Edwards AFB. Lockheed had won the bid for the CX-X contract four years earlier, ahead of Boeing, Douglas and General Dynamics. With new engines, the maximum mass of the galaxy was eventually raised to 418t
