- Information
On this day in 1939, the prototype of the Focke Wulf 190, the v1 version, performed its first flight. The first prototypes are equipped with the BMW 139 radial engine and a propeller spinner flushing the fuselage. The BMW139 turned out to be troublesome and would be replaced by the BMW 801 on the production line. The radial engine allowed to produce fighters in numbers without overloading the production of inline engine Daimler series DB600 already used on many other aircraft, including the Messerschmitt 109. More than 20,000 Fw190 would be produced between 1939 and 1945
