The room was originally used as a waiting room for guests, but also for important ceremonies such as the reading of the banker’s Will. The room takes its name from the frieze that runs around the top of the walls.

Baldassarre Peruzzi began work on the frescoed frieze, with evident allegorical referal to the virtues of the patron. He frescoed the twelve Labours of Hercules and other deeds performed by the hero, as well as various mythological episodes, incorporating flashes of the nascent culture of classical antiquity but also supplementing the iconography with late-medieval Ovidian imagery
