On this day in 1974, a US army private dismissed from flight school stole a Bell UH-1B helicopter from Ft Meade Maryland in order to show that he can fly. He flew at low level towards the Washington DC Mall. He flew over the main monuments before hovering above to the White House lawn. He then took off and was chased by police helicopters, in vain. He eventually came back to the White House, hoping to be able to stand his case before the President, who was, however, absent from the property this day
