On this day in 1969, a commercial aircraft (a Caravelle operated by Air Inter) is landed automatically down to the ground in 'CAT III' conditions (decision height 50ft, visibility 200m) with passengers on board. This is a world's first, and proves the quality and robustness of automatic pilot developed by Sud Aviation.
