On this day in 1989, two F-14A of the U.S. Navy engaged in aerial combat off Libya with two MiG-23. The two fighters from USS John F Kennedy shot down Qaddafi's aircraft, using an AIM-7 Sparrow radar-homing missile and an AIM-9 Sidewinder infrared-homing missile. Two weeks earlier, a 747 from PanAm had been destroyed in flight by a libyan bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland. One of the two F-14 is now on display at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington
