On this day in 1969, the U.S. Navy selected Grumman's '303' design as the winner of the VFX tender for a future long range fighter, to replace the Phantom from McDonnell Douglas, the great loser of that decision. Less than two years later, the F-14 Tomcat would fly for the first time.
