On this day in 1911, Eugene Ely made the first landing and the first takeoff of a plane from a ship, the USS Pennsylvania specially modified for the occasion by adding a 133ft/40m wooden deck, with a primitive system of strands. As a life vest, Ely was wearing two bicyle tire inner tubes around his shoulders.
