On this day in 1959, The Vickers Vanguard flew for the first time from Weybridge. This quad turboprop, although it was quite fast, experienced a fairly modest passenger transport career until the mid-70s. Many were then converted to cargo by adding a wide door to the front of the fuselage. Vanguards flew until 1996.
