- Information
On this day in 1946, a P-80 Shooting Star, the first US Air Force jet fighter, broke the transcontinental speed record by flying from Long Beach to New York in 4h13, at the average of 941 km/h (585mph). The aircraft of Col. Councill had been specially modified with additional tanks, allowing it to carry out the longest non-stop flight for a reaction plane on that date. The previous record, held by a B-29, was beaten by more than 1h15.
