On this day in 1939, First Lieutenant Kelsey made the first flight of the XP-38, with its distinctive twin boom shape, which would earn it its the combat nickname of Gabelschwanzteufel, the twin fork devil. For the Allies, it would be called 'Lightning'. The brand of Kelly Johnson, the legendary designer from Lockheed, can already be recognized in this innovative design.
