On this day in 1949, a Lockheed L-749 Constellation operated by Eastern Airlines broke the transcontinental speed record by flying from Burbank to La Guardia in 6h18. On the same day 20 years before that, another Lockheed Vega set the same record in 18h22, more or less three times slower.
