On this day in 1979, Sabrina Patricia Jackintell broke the world record for altitude for gliders by soaring in her Grob Astir CS, a 50ft-span, to an altitude of 12,637m / 41,460 ft above Pikes Peak in Colorado. Rising at 4,267m/14,115ft above sea level, Pikes Peak is mostly renowned for its annual car race and cog railway. The record still holds to this day for female category.
