On this day in 1962, seated on top of the new Mercury Atlas launcher, John Glenn becomes the first US astronaut to be placed in orbit. The previous Redstone launcher only allowed Shepard and Grissom to perform suborbital flights before his. After nearly 5h in space, the mission was interrupted when data were showing that the thermal shield might be not correctly locked into position
