On this day in 1954, the Lockheed XF-104 prototype, the 'missile with man in it', made its first flight through the expert hands of Tony LeVier. Following a visit of the Korean front three years earlier, designer Kelly Johnson understood that the next generation of fighter had to offer a level of performance a class above what would then be in the US Air Force inventory. Major changes will have to be made before moving on to the production model, but this prototype would be the first of a series of more than 2500 aircraft
