On this day in 1979, the Dassault Mirage 400 flew for the first time. This twin engine was significantly larger than the 'light' Mirage 2000 engine, and had been self-funded by Dassault to oppose the F-15 and Tornado. As the French Air Force did not consider it, and after the Saudis preferred the Tornado, the program was terminated
