On this day in 1959, the Sikorsky XHSS-2 took off for the first time. Commissioned by the US navy to hunt & kill communist submarines, this helicopter had the capability to land on water thanks to its amphibious hull, hence its name the Sea King. Beyond its anti-submarine role, the Sea King was derived into many military and civil variants and often used for search & rescue at sea.
