On this day in 1989, the prototype of the tilt-rotor Bell-Boeing V-22 performed its first flight in helicopter mode. Developed in response to the inability of Americans to respond effectively to the Tehran hostages crisis, the V-22 should combine vertical take-off & landing and a long range/ high speed capabilities. This is the first tilt rotor intended to enter production. It would take more than 15 years of development and testing before the US Marine Corps declares its first MV-22 quadron operational.
