On this day in 1945, Douglas XBT2D-1 'Dauntless II' performed its first flight. Designed to replace the Helldivers and Avengers on the US Navy aircraft carriers, it will only enter in service at the end of 1946 after being renamed AD-1 Skyraider. More than 3000 were built and would fight over the Korean, Vietnamese, Algerian and Chadian conflicts.
