On this day in 1996, Tupolev and NASA debuted their partnership to use a Tu-144 as a flying test bench. Due to perform flight tests to prepare the development of a future American Supersonic Transport aircraft, a Tu-144 had been specially instrumented and re-engined with jet engines from a Tu-160 Blackjack for that matter. About thirty flights were planned but the program was cut short by lack of budget.
