- Information
On this day in 1948, the carrier-based night fighter Douglas F3D (F-10) Skyknight flew for the first time. Nicknamed the whale, even the 'Drut' (read backward) , it was not as famous as the F-86 Sabre, its contemporary. Yet it accomplished its mission by shooting down MiGs at night above Korea. Equipped with a big radar for this mission, this aircraft was at the genesis of the first radar-guided air-air missiles, with the development of the Sparrow.
