On this day in 1929, The first flight simulator developed by Ed Link was introduced. Link was a builder of organ and nickelodeons and used his knowledge in pneumatic and automation to build a mobile 'box' in which the student pilot takes place as if he was in the cockpit of his plane and which reacts to is stick and rudder input. The student is in audio connection with an instructor seating next to the trainer, and a mobile pen reproduces the trajectory of the fictional flight on a map. The Link Trainer would safely train more than half a million pilots to instrument flight techniques for a much lower cost than real flights. Link created a whole segment of the industry.
