- Information
On this day in 1952, a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress took off for the very first time, only 5 years after Boeing has put in flight its very first jet, the B-47, another bomber. The first XB-52 prototype had been damaged earlier during a ground test, so it is the pre-production aircraft YB-52 which had the honor to perform this first flight. The B-52 would be the spear of the almighty Strategic Air Command, holding the non-stop airborne nuclear alert from 1960 to 1968. In 2019, the H version of the B-52 is still in service and the US Air Force to operate the type until 2050, an operational life of nearly a century.
