On this day in 1978, a Boeing 707 of Korean Air Line flying from Paris to Seoul via Anchorage is targeted by a missile from a Sukhoi Su-15 flagon of the Soviet air defense. The navigation systems of the 707 went off course near the north pole and the plane had veered towards the Kola peninsula, the base of Soviet submarines, rather than proceeding to Alaska. The missile damaged the aircraft which was then crash-landed on a frozen lake. Only two victims were counted. Five years later, another Su-15 would shot another Boeing from KAL whose navigation system had it drifting over Kamchatka this time, with no survivor.
