On this day in 1961, the Tupolev Tu-114, the commercial derivative of the Tu-95 'Bear' strategic bomber, enters into service within the Soviet company Aeroflot. Inheriting of the exceptional features of its big brother, the Tu-114 'Cleat' is at the time the largest airliner in the world, capable of carrying more than 200 passengers at distances over 10.000 km. When it brought Khrushchev to Washington, the Americans had a hard time finding passenger steps high enough to get the Soviet delegation on the ground. Its height ⌀5.6m propellers were driven by a total of 60.000hp in total (more than an A400m) making it the fastest propeller in the world, a title that still stands today (871kmh over 1000 km)
