On this day in 1949, the Sikorsky S-52 helicopter sets a speed record over a 3km distance at 208kmh (130mph). It was the first helicopter with metallic blades and also the first one able to perform a loop. Nearly a hundred have been built, used by US Navy, US Marines and US Coast Guards. Rotorcraft have evolved a lot since then and the record is 372kmh (230mph) since 1991.
