On this day in 1927, the Ryan NYP made its first flight out of San Diego. Charles Lindbergh has ordered this custom-made aircraft, sponsored by St Louis businessmen, in order to win the $25.000 of the Orteig prize. Intention: to cross the Atlantic from New York to Paris non-stop. To honor his sponsors, Lindbergh named his aircraft the 'Spirit of St Louis'.
