On this day in 1949, the Soviet forces raised the land blockade around Berlin that they had installed a year earlier in retaliation to the introduction of the Deutsche Mark in the city. Without interruption during more than 300 days, the aircraft of the armed forces installed in western Germany have supplied the isolated capital, carrying in nearly 13000t of goods. The airlift would eventually last until the end of September for fear that the USSR might block road access again. The Douglas C-54 Skymaster of the Military Air Transport Service were the spearhead of the American effort.
