On this day in 1949, the record of people aboard a flight is broken when a Martin JRM-3 Mars of the US Navy flew with 301 passengers in addition to the 7 crew members from San Francisco to San Diego along the California coast. Due to lack of seat, some passengers are installed on mattresses laid on the floor. The Martin Mars is one of the biggest seaplane ever built, with a maximum weight of nearly 75t. Only two survived, converted into air tanker, but without operating contract for some years now.
