On this day in 1949, while he was testing the new flying wing Armstrong Whitworth AW52, J.O Lancaster encountered severe pitch oscillation during a dive, which left him no choice but to use his Martin Baker Mk.I ejection seat, the first time ever such a device was used operationally and saving a life for the first time. After ejection, the AW52 speed reduced, the oscillations dampened and the aircraft landed itself in the countryside. As per today, Martin Baker claims their devices helped saved more than 7600 lives.
