- Information
On this day in 1953, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II is broadcast on TV, a first in the history of royalty. In order that her Canadian subjects can also watch the ceremony, a RAF Canberra and a RCAF CF-100 Canuck are relaying the film reels of the ceremony between London and Montreal as fast as possible. The operation will be repeated three times during the ceremony to minimize the delay. This is also the first direct flight between the United Kingdom and Canada mainland, the relay being done at Goose Bay. The first satellite broadcast will only happen 9 years later.
