On this day in 1979, the BK-117 helicopter made its first flight, and on the same day 20 years later, its improved version EC145 took off for the first time. Built in collaboration by Kawasaki and MBB (which became Eurocopter then Airbus Helicopters), this light twin has been a success in the 'parapublic' missions (police, ambulance, emergency) and also within the armed forces. Among the 1500 helicopters of the BK117 family, the US army ordered it by itself more than 400 of them, known as the UH-72 Lakota.
