On this day in 1968, the first FB-111 production aircraft flies off General Dynamics plant in Fort Worth. Developed as a strategic bomber version of the F-111A, the FB-111 included the larger wings of the F-111B naval version as well as a brand new navigation & weapon system which proved to be difficult to develop. The FB-111 was due to replace the Mach2+ Convair B-58 Hustler as well as the earliers B-52. Most of them were turned into tactical bomber when the B-1B entered service in the late 1980s.
