On this day in 1954, in an era when civilian airliners market was dominated by Douglas, Boeing rolled out its Model 367-80 quad jet airliner, developed on its own funds. It was a huge risk for Boeing as they had not secured a launch customer at the time. The 'Dash-80' was the basis for the KC-135 and Boeing 707 designs, which is the start of Boeing modern history as a global commercial aircraft manufacturer. The 367-80 was a one of a kind ship, and both the KC-135 and 707 had wider fuselages.
