On this day in 1969, the US Navy deployed its first A-7E Corsair II within the VA-122. squadron. This version of the light carrier-based bomber brought a more powerful engine, as well as a new inertial navigation system, a digital computer (a novelty at the time) and the famous M-61 canon. The type would be deployed in Vietnam where its weapon system proved to be very effective. More than 500 have been built.
