On this day in 1963, a VTOL (Vertical Take-Off & Landing) jet aircraft was tested for the very first time out of an aircraft carrier. A Hawker Siddeley P.1127 performed experimental trials of vertical take-off and landings from the deck of Royal Navy's HMS Ark Royal. Its successor, the Harrier, would be operated from aircraft carriers by the Navies of UK, US, Spain, Italy, and India.
