- Information
On this day in 1980, McDonnell Douglas flew their TF-15A two seater prototype for the first time in a new configuration. The plane that had been initially designed as the ultimate interceptor of Russian Bombers, the king of air combat, was turned into an ammunition truck. Painted in a green camouflage adapted to low altitude over Europe, this TF-15 could take extra fuel thanks to conformal tanks and was equipped with extra hard points capable of heavy and multiple loads. Initially a private venture of MDD, the project quickly got the interest of the US Air Force that saw a good opportunity to anticipate the replacement of the F-111. It would take 6 years to McDonnell to fully develop the concept and the F-15E Strike Eagle entered in service in 1989 then saw combat during the Gulf War.
